Chapter 23: Text messages
Giselle
When did I fall asleep?
I groaned as I sat up. I must have been exhausted, because I had fallen asleep on my couch without changing out of my work clothes. My mouth was dry, so I dragged myself from the soft cushions and got to my feet to make the short journey into the kitchen, which seemed more like an odyssey in my half-asleep body.
As I opened the fridge to find something to drink, I noticed the clock on the stove read 5:23 a.m. I groaned again. Now, I would never be able to get back to sleep.
The dream turned over in my mind. By now, I was almost certain they were not just dreams. They were too clear, and the images were of things that I had never seen in my life. It was impossible for me to create such vivid, consistent, completely new imagery in my head, right? Everything I saw in the dreams seemed so lifelike and real and lived-in, they must have been real.
I poured myself a glass of orange juice with the idea that it would help me to brighten up, but it just tasted acidic. In defeat, I drained what remained in the glass and left it in the sink without washing it. I'd get to it later.
I wandered back to the couch and plopped myself down, unsure of how I was going to spend the few hours between now and 8 a.m., when I would need to get ready for work, anyway. Maybe I'd even go in a little early so I could leave early, too. When I tried the TV, there was nothing in any of my subscriptions that seemed interesting, so I turned it off and closed my eyes. My optimism was unrewarded; I still couldn't fall asleep.
On a whim, I took out my phone and flicked through social media. Nothing interesting there, either. Without any thought, I opened my messages, and my finger hovered over Oliver's name. I caught myself just before I could press it. Was this a good idea? I mean, after the last date, he might not want to talk. Or talking might be awkward. Orâ¦I tapped his name anyway. Once again, I paused with my thumbs hovering over the keyboard.
Screw it.
My fingers typed on the small digital keyboard, forming something simple and hopefully greeting worth responding to.
Had fun on our date, I said, finishing with a smiley face.
Ehâ¦
I deleted it since it was definitely not the right thing to sayâ he would know it was only a half-truth, and then he probably wouldn't want to talk about it. I tried a new message: Thinking of you.
But I erased that one, too. It was too childish and too romantic. Oliver and I weren't a couple or anything, so it was a stupid thing to say to him. It would make me come on too strong, or it would make him think I was boy-crazy like a teenager.
I sighed for a long time, staring at the empty message box.
